Congrats to Kilian Maidhof for winning the European Championships 2024 Open Tournament!!! Kilian dominated the competition by winning all seven of his seeding matches, then his three knockout matches, to go completely unbeaten for the whole championship tournament. Only Jochen Pfeiffer has done this previously (in 2016 and 2017), and he only had to win four seeding matches instead of seven to go unbeaten, so Kilian has set a new benchmark in consistency in a single tournament.
This is also Kilian’s first ever Major 750 Tournament victory. The closest he has come before was a runner-up spot at the Berlin 2023 Fight Night. This time he beat Markus Utke 5-4 in a dramatic final match.
Jasper Moens, who was aiming to complete the first ever “calendar year grand slam” of all four Major tournaments (after winning the BJC, NJF and EJC Fight Nights) lost to Markus 2-5 in their semi-final.
Brook Roberts had his best-ever result at the European Championships by beating Jasper twice in the tournament, once in the seeding rounds and again 5-3 in the third place match. Revenge is sweet for Brook as he lost to Jasper in the final of the BJC 2024 Fight Night.
Congrats to Wiebke Schnapper for winning the European Championships 2024 Women’s Tournament!!! She beat Lena Dung 5-2 in the final to earn her first ever Fight Night Combat victory, and climbed to 2nd place in the 2024 Women’s Rankings.
Lena Dung earned her first ever Fight Night final match appearance the hard way, by beating Isabell Stroben, who didn’t lose a single seeding match, 5-3 in their semi-final. Isabell Stroben beat Merel Coppens 5-0 in the third place match.
Thanks to everyone involved in the tournament!
Save the date: Saturday 30th November!!!
This year we have the sports hall for a full 10 hours of three club combat and open juggling (10am to 8pm) so we have time for lots more than just a single tournament! Even if you didn't get an invite to the main event, everyone is welcome to join in with Team combat, Zombie combat, melee combat and more.
The venue is Grundshule Wildau - (google maps, closest public transport connection is S-Bahn Wildau).
Preliminary schedule:
10:00 - 11:00 - Open melee combat / open juggling.
11:00 - 13:00 - Team combat tournament (mixed doubles).
13:00 - 14:00 - Lunch break / open juggling.
14:00 - 15:30 - European Championships Open and Women's group stage matches.
16:00 - 17:30 - The European Championships 2023 Open and Women's knockout matches (hopefully live-streamed on YouTube and/or Instagram).
18:00 - 20:00 - Zombie Combat / open juggling.
20:00 - Dinner.
22:00 - Party.
An automatic invite into the European Championships Open tournament is extended to the winners of the four Major Tournaments (typically the British, Netherlands, Berlin, and EJC Fight Nights), as long as they live in Europe and have taken part in at least two other tournaments in the 2024 season.
On November 4th 2024, the top 7 players in the 2024 Open Race Rankings will receive a direct invite, so long as they live in Europe and have taken part in at least three tournaments in the 2024 season.
The eighth invite is held open for a wildcard entry, and will be awarded to a highly ranked player who doesn't meet the previous invite criteria (eg. Wes Peden in 2019 for winning the EJC but not taking part in any other tournament, Yaron Davidovich in 2022 for being highly ranked but living outside of Europe). If a wildcard invite isn't needed or a suitable juggler can't be found, the 8th ranked juggler in the Open Race Rankings will be invited. If they aren't available, a wildcard tournament will be held at the European Championships event in advance of the main tournament.
Qualification into the Women's tournament will follow the same rules, based on the 2024 Womens Race Rankings.
Participation in the Team Combat tournament will be finalised on the day. The tournament is for mixed doubles pairings. The plan for the tournament structure is group stage qualifying (seeded by the combined rankings of the players), followed by a knockout tournament with the top eight teams.
